Cancel insurance only after the vehicle has been picked up and the signed title has been handed off. Use the pickup/title-transfer date as the insurance effective date. Do not cancel early; an uninsured loss can still fall on you while you legally own the car, and some states penalize a lapse on a still-registered vehicle.
Check current instructions with the Texas DMV; if it requires a plate or registration step, handle that first. Then call your insurer, remove the donated vehicle or cancel the policy, and ask about any prorated refund.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Before changing insurance, confirm the car is no longer in your possession and the title was signed and handed off. Keep the pickup receipt, title copies if you made them, and any donor paperwork together. The safe trigger is both events: pickup plus title hand-off. If pickup is only scheduled or the title is still with you, keep the vehicle insured until those items are complete.
Handle plates or registration first
Next, check whether you must return, keep, destroy, or transfer plates, or cancel registration after a donation. States handle this differently. Some tie insurance status to active registration; others do not. If a DMV step is required before insurance cancellation, complete it first and save proof. When you are unsure, ask the state DMV before you remove coverage.
Call with the donation date
Call your insurance company after the pickup and title hand-off. Tell them the vehicle was donated, give the donation date, and ask them to make the insurance change effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. Do not choose an earlier date. If they ask for paperwork, send the pickup receipt or donation acknowledgement you have on hand.
Remove or cancel coverage
If the donated vehicle was on a multi-car policy, remove only that vehicle and keep the rest of the policy active. If it was your only insured vehicle, cancel the policy effective on the donation date. Continuous coverage note: if you still drive any other car, make sure you have valid coverage for that vehicle before ending the old policy.
Request refund and written proof
Ask whether you prepaid premium beyond the effective cancellation or removal date. If so, request a prorated refund and ask how it will be issued. Before you hang up, request written confirmation showing the vehicle, VIN if available, effective date, refund amount if any, and policy status. Save it with your donation records for future questions.
Records to keep together
Keep a small donation file until the insurance change, plate or registration step, and your records are complete. Include the pickup receipt, donation acknowledgement, title copy if you made one, plate or registration confirmation if required, and the insurer’s written cancellation or vehicle-removal notice. If you also need the ownership notice checklist, use our separate release-of-liability guide. Good records make it easier to answer a later billing question, refund question, or policy audit.
Common questions
Will I get money back after canceling?
Possibly. If you prepaid premium past the pickup/title-transfer date, ask for a prorated refund. The amount depends on your policy terms, payment schedule, and effective date. Ask the insurer to confirm the refund amount and how it will be sent.
What if my donated car was on a policy with other cars?
Do not cancel the whole policy unless you mean to end coverage for every vehicle on it. Ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle effective on the donation date. Then review the updated declarations page to confirm your other cars stayed insured.
Can I set the cancellation date before pickup?
No. Use the actual pickup/title-transfer date, not an earlier date. Before pickup and title hand-off, you may still legally own the vehicle. Canceling early can leave you responsible for an uninsured loss and may create a lapse problem while the car is still registered.
What should I do if the insurer asks for proof?
Send the pickup receipt, donation acknowledgement, or other paperwork showing the vehicle and donation date. If you do not have the exact document they request, ask what substitute they will accept. Keep a copy of whatever you send and any written response.
